Video: 100 Years of Angel Island Immigration Station Ceremony

logoI’ll be the first to admit that this might not be the most exciting video of all time. It’s surely not someone kayaking over Yosemite Falls. Or Roosevelt Elk during rutting season in Redwood National Park. It’s not even the now all-too-familiar “slow pan across beautiful landscape for 30 seconds and post it on YouTube” shot. It is, however, worth listening to because what happened at Angel Island from 1910-1940 is important. Not just because I say so. Or not because a round of Nobel Laureates decided it. It’s important because the United States, Angel Island, and immigration into the west were greatly affected by the Chinese Exclusion Act and there are lessons to learn there. So, yea, it’s not exciting. But, take a couple minutes and think about what the speakers have to say because even though the events happened 70-100 years ago they are still completely relevant today. Here are two videos (out of many more) from last week’s 100th Anniversary celebration of the opening of the Angel Island Immigration Station- which featured a proclamation from President Barack Obama and speeches from some of San Francisco’s poet laureates.
